Merrimint

Merrimint is a small, chibi, online, role playing game based in a colorful and fun world. The staff working on the game is driven towards delivering an exciting adventure with an attempt to pull away from typical grinding in the RPG world.

About

Forums

Merrimint was founded in 2009 by Hikaru. Since then the game has undergone many ownership transfers and the result has been a large number of reboots in the development of the game. The Merrimint team now consists of five active developers and we are all striving towards releasing our creation to the general public.

Our completed website is still in the works, but please feel free to follus us on the forums by clicking on the link to your left. We are working hard to try and bring our vision to all of you and summon Merrimint to life.

User Registration

User Registration has been disabled for the time being. The boards are undergoing a very awkward period of leadership transfer and developer vacancies. If you have any friends that want to be added to the forums, please let me know and I will temporarily re allow registration so that they can make an account, and afterwards registration will be closed once more.

Along with this, several user accounts will be disabled and view ability of the forums will be limited severely. I'm not particularly fond of the fact that guests can log in and view everything outside of the Admin Section. I don't know exactly what I'll limit visibility to, but you're more than welcome to give me feedback on the matter.

I'm leaving this open for potentially new members to join as well. If you would like to access the rest of the forums, please send me an e-mail at ritiostehryl@gmail.com and I'll gladly talk with you about development and current situations to see if you still want to jump aboard the Merrimint Online forums.

Current Progress

Alright, we've (Merrimint Admins/Developers) been talking constantly in Staff forums for an extended time among ourselves, planning the things we'd release on Merrimint, what we want the game to be and what we think you would want the game to be. Keep an eye on the General Discussion under the 'Merrimint' category for polls and discussions you can join in to inspire our ideas for Merrimint! The current active Poll is: Quick Question, where we want to know which aspect of the game is the most fun for you, so go over and select your opinions, and post a descriptive explanation if you wish! We're really excited to hear any opinion, no idea is a dumb one, there's always someone out there looking for the same kind of game as you, so don't hold back your ideas!

So back to the discussion. Yes, Merrimint has returned, and because we've been having a small trickle of new and old faces embracing the boards, I've decided to let loose a bit of global progress information.

Those older faces may or may not know me, but i've taken over the Project Leader title of Merrimint, previously Anthony, and before him Hikaru. Anthony is still the current owner of Merrimint, and that won't change, and isn't expected to. I simply co-ordinate the team where I can, giving them jobs when I see the need for it. To the newer faces, hey, I'm the pixel artist of the game, Toranos. Nice to meet.

Which leads to the current team listing:

Coders:
Anthony

Web Designer:
Glenn

Concept Artist:
Hurdy

Lore Writers:
Ritios
Rei

All these people are dedicated to the continuation of Merrimint, and we've been through some deadbeats, but these guys seem to stick like an old plaster. :P We're here to craft the game, but we've always been a project that, as stated above, is curious and excited to hear the gaming desires of the community.

After a realization, we've decided to change everything to custom or custom-edited, in order to make us different from every other Breeze-graphics, prosilver-forums, lightly edited EO game out there. Don't take us for thinking we're above, we just want to be the best we can be.

So to our progress:

Graphics

Image

The pixel art has undergone a large change, from the small and delightful Breeze, to our bigger sprites. I've gained several disapproving comments, but we as a team think it's best, more room for detail being the biggest benefit. Give it some time, hopefully it will grow on you. NPC Characters (as depicted above) will roam the towns and lands of Merrimint with their own spritesheets, and players will have the ability to change their clothing to suit their desire.

Tile sets as well, are going through a change, a simple look still, with dark outlined objects that are interact-able (fences, signs, chests, doors, message boards, stairs etc). The tilesets will be vast, and each terrain will have different styled buildings, trees, foliage, environment anomalies and ground tiles, such as forest terrain having dirt or stone paths, whereas towns will have patterned and orderly tiles.

Spells and special effects (fires, waterfalls, fog) will be designed using a particle engine. More about this when relevant.

Dialogue images are a concept being designed by the gifted Hurdy. We'll be using frontal images, with the character above the chatbox, talking to the player. Hopefully mixed with a multi-choice chat system, players will 'talk' to NPCs with a bigger image than just their character sprite.

Lore

Monsters are in development, and our signature monster, created by the lovely Rei, is the Mote.

???* ^_^* <3* :)* ;)*

Motes will be friendly creatures, and all characters will be unable to hurt their cute flesh. Motes are simply Merrimint's mascot.

Chapter One (The Rebels of Undellion) is complete, entirely written by the learned Ritios. More of an introduction chapter, we're not getting into gritty stuff until later chapters.

Coding

A snippet from the amazing Anthony's coding progress post:

Anthony wrote:
Completed

  • Dynamic Character Sprites - Player sprites are fully dynamic, depending on sprite size (in pixels) the engine will adjust to accommodate it.
  • Paperdoll System - All equipment, hair and eyes will be customizable and visual when equipped to your character.

To-Do

  • Crafting System - Able to craft items from resources gathered from around the world.
  • Quest System - Self explanatory, fully working quest system integrated into NPC interaction/conversation.
  • Proper Signs - Signs that are places as a tile but when hovered with the mouse render an actual sign on screen.

The server is going to be hosted by the glorious Glenn, and will be separate from the website/forums host, so if one goes down, another is still available. Hopefully. We are currently experiencing issues connecting, but it's no challenge. We hope to keep the game 24/7, so once we leave development phases, we'll probably shift to a dedicated server.

That's all for now. If you have any questions, please ask, and our team should answer to the best of their knowledge!

Good day Merriminters!
